btw. visit Ralvery, Crochetville & Etsy. These three sites alone should get your to rethink this your positon. Two of those sites is 98% dedicated to knitting and crocheting, roving, spinning & felting.

There are even more sites, but those are my three favorites. hmmmmmp. Grandma Indeed. I starting crocheting at the age 5 and never stopped.

OMG. You have got to be kidding. In the summer I work on scarfs & hats and blocks that will become blankets for charities in the winter time. Baby blankets are needed all times of the year. Light weight clothes, doily's, toys, dish clothes, purses and other fun things!!!! On the 25th of each month, I work on a project for Christmas gifts, tree, ect.

I crochet all year long, every day for at least two hours a day. I at least make two trips a month to my local hl or JoAnn's.

Please, Please, if your are thinking of starting a yarn shop. Don't listen to this. I guarantee you if you make your prices reasonable, your selections high end, you will have people flocking at your shops.

I just can't believe anyone has this notion! Surely they do not crochet or knit.

Just wanted to add my 2c, as I knitter I definately do not stop over summer (and might I add I live in Qld Aus - a very very hot and humid climate). As others have said there are plenty of yarns and patterns suited to the warmer months but I have been know to also get a start on things for winter, I own a yarn shop and have sold jumper quantities to others wanting to get something made for the next colder season.

People are good at adapting to the environment!

Where I live, summers are hot and sticky. I still knit just as much as in winter, though, just different things - lace, toys, gadget cosies etc.

However, I don't sell my knitted items, I just make for my family and friends. I can see how selling of knitted clothing would be affected by the weather - I don't think much of the light lacy knitwear is sold (relative to warm scarves, shrugs etc.), as it tends to take much more effort and therefore be more expensive. Things like toys etc. shouldn't be affected, though.

Just because 2 crocheters (thus far) have responded to this article doesn't mean 'crochet in summer: OK, kintting in simmer: NOT OK. You are still labouring under a gross misapprehension. All the crocheted items mentionend also apply to knitting. Your information is "plain wrong". Open you eyes and see all the crocheted/knitted artistry that is all around us. Not just in shops or craft groups but also in the public arena. WE ALL CROCHET-KNIT all year long! And there is more to the business of crochet-knitting than the US or Northern Hemisphere. There is an entire PLANET to whom your potential business crafters may want to market. Go to the corner, NOW!

Thanks to all for the comments regarding the above article which is one that I did not personally write. However, having passed it for publication, and with a little hindsight, I can see that the article is being misinterpreted with the inclusion of crocheting in with knitting - it should just include knitting.

Nevertheless, the fact is that the likes of knitted sweaters, scarves, gloves etc tend to be more in demand during the autumn/winter months than they are in the summer although that demand can vary depending where in the world you may be located.

The whole concept behind this site is to encourage folks to turn their craft hobbies into money making ventures while working from home. This particular article was really just to point out that there can be seasonable variations although it would appear, from the various comments, that most folks adapt to the demand - diversification at its best!

This information is totally out-of-date, or the author is totally misinformed.
If the shop is stocked with only worsted weight wool, they might have a problem. But it wouldn't be the fault of the crocheters and knitters, it would be due to the shop owner's lack of research, and purchasing.
Check out the busy yarn shops in the summer. First there's lovely cotton, bamboo, silk, linen, and blends. Great for spring, summer and fall. There are sport-weight and lace-weight yarns. There's plenty of sock yarn - year round. Try lace-weight silk for a shawl, great for a summer evening; lace-weight bamboo for a summer tank top, great alone or under a blazer for the office.

"the knitting and crocheting needles are stashed back in the box to return to their summer home in the attic next to the Christmas ornaments"
What? My hooks have have blazing all summer - short-sleeve tops and vests to wear to a crochet convention in August. People sure were buying at the market, too. I've also been working on baby afghans, gifts are needed year- round, and my house is air conditioned. The plenty of swatching. I may not have a full-sized afghan spread over my lap, but I can work on motifs to be joined into an afghan; and I can swatch stitch patterns, and different yarns and plan for the big projects.

I wish there was a place to write - this article is totally wrong, please remove it!

You've got to be kidding. In the warmer or down right HOT climets we just make things lighter & lacyer. I have a beautiful crocheted sweater made just fior evening summer wear. It also works fine for those overly cooled air conditioned buildings. I think it's time to rethink your position.

Where did you get your information? I'm afraid that you are sorely misinformed, knittin g and crochet is far from a seasonal business. Have you ever walked through a yarn store, if you had you would have noticed many different types and weights of yarns and knit and crochet threads. There are many projects that sell well during the warm months as well as the cool months, just a very few samples include water bottle holders, I-Pod cozies, clutches, purses, sun hats, baby blankets, wedding afghans, cotton bed spreads, the list goes on and on. As a crocheter and knitter I was very upset to read the fact that you think that our supplies get put away in the warmer months, we do our work all year long, and the fact that you display people who knit and crochet as Grandmothers is equally disturbing, there are many men who knit and crochet as well and knitiing and crocheting is well and alive in the younger generations as well, I am a mother in her early 30's, and some of my children as young as three and five are learning to crochet. You really need to do better research before you write articles that would discourage people from trying to start a business that they love.
